Radiator balancing ensures hot water flows evenly throughout your central heating system, so all rooms heat up at a similar pace and reach a comfortable temperature. For example, if your living room radiator is scorching hot but the bedroom radiator stays lukewarm, it means the water is flowing too quickly through one and not enough through the other. By carefully adjusting the valves, you can control the flow of hot water to each radiator, improving overall comfort and preventing some rooms from overheating while others remain cold.

This not only creates a more pleasant home environment but can also reduce energy waste and lower your heating bills by making your system more efficient.

What radiator balancing does

Each radiator receives hot water from the boiler or heat source. Those closest to the boiler can take more than their share, leaving distant radiators with less hot water and making some rooms too hot while others remain cold.

Balancing does not repair every heating fault, but it can regulate the flow through each radiator. The aim is to create a small, broadly consistent temperature drop between the hot pipe entering a radiator and the cooler pipe leaving it.

Prepare safely before you start

Work only when the heating system and radiator surfaces are cool enough to touch safely. Protect flooring with an old towel, keep children and pets away, and take a photo of the original valve positions so you can retrace your steps.

  • Two adjustable spanners, used gently and only where needed

  • A cloth or towel to protect floors and catch minor drips

  • A thermometer or infrared thermometer, if available

  • A screwdriver for any valve caps that need removing

Most radiators have two valves. The thermostatic radiator valve, or TRV, normally has a numbered dial and controls room temperature. The lockshield is usually covered by a plain cap and controls water flow for balancing. Never assume a valve is safe to turn if it looks corroded or seized.

Radiator balancing: the step-by-step method

  1. Turn every radiator valve fully open. Set each TRV to its highest setting and remove or loosen lockshield caps if necessary. Turn the lockshield spindle anticlockwise gently until it stops, but do not force it. If a valve will not move, stop and arrange professional help.

  2. Switch the heating on. Set the heating to run continuously for a while and allow the boiler, pump and radiators to warm up. Close internal doors and keep radiator settings consistent while you assess the system.

  3. Find the first radiator to heat. Starting near the boiler, carefully feel or measure the two pipes connected to each radiator. The pipe that warms first is the flow, while the other is the return. An infrared thermometer makes this easier, but use caution because pipes can become very hot.

  4. Throttle the first radiator. Turn its lockshield clockwise a small amount, such as a quarter turn, then wait for the system to settle. Continue with small adjustments rather than closing the valve completely. The nearest radiators often need the most restriction.

  5. Work through the remaining radiators. Move from the closest radiator to the boiler towards the furthest one, repeating the same process. Open a lockshield slightly if a radiator is receiving too little flow, or close it slightly if it heats much faster than the others.

  6. Check the temperature drop. Compare the flow and return temperatures on each radiator after allowing time for the changes to take effect. You are looking for a modest, similar drop across the radiators, not an exact number. If one radiator has a much larger or smaller difference, make another small lockshield adjustment and wait again.

  7. Set the TRVs afterwards. Once the system is balanced, return each TRV to a comfortable room setting. Avoid turning every TRV fully up, as this can make rooms unnecessarily hot and reduce the benefit of balancing.

Changes can take several minutes to show, particularly in a larger home. Make a note of each adjustment and change only one lockshield at a time, so you can tell which setting improved the result.

When a radiator still will not heat

Balancing cannot overcome trapped air, mechanical faults or restricted pipework. If the top of a radiator is cold, switch the heating off, allow it to cool and bleed it carefully. Check the pressure afterwards if you have a sealed system, but do not adjust system pressure unless you understand the instructions for your boiler.

A radiator that stays cold with the TRV open may have a stuck valve pin. The pin can sometimes be freed gently after the TRV head is removed, but do not force it or dismantle a valve that is leaking. Cold areas at the bottom of a radiator can indicate sludge, while weak circulation may point to a pump or wider system problem.

When balancing will not solve uneven heating

Cold bottoms on several radiators commonly suggest sludge in the system, where a professional clean or power flush may be more suitable than further valve adjustments. Noisy pipework, banging or knocking can indicate trapped air, poor circulation or water hammer, and balancing alone may not cure it.

Stop immediately if you see a leak, a valve is seized, a fitting begins to turn, or the system behaves unexpectedly. If you have a sealed central heating system and are unsure about bleeding, pressure or valve adjustments, use a qualified heating professional rather than taking a risk.
